Samsung has been focusing a huge amount on their flagships as of late, bringing out new a new color option for both the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Samsung Galaxy S9+ across the world, for example. They haven’t forgotten about the budget sector though where they remain one of the top brands in India. To that end, the company’s Samsung Galaxy J8 has just been launched in India. It’s a budget device, but it looks like it could be a pretty decent phone for some with some cool camera functionality as well. Interestingly, it’s charged above Xiaomi’s offerings who they would mainly be taking on in the region. Take a look down below for its specifications.
Samsung will be offering three variants of the device which has 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. These three variants will only change based on color, with the South Korean company releasing the device in blue, black and gold. It’ll cost ₹18,990 (~$280), making it quite a bit more expensive than the Xiaomi and Honor devices it will be competing with in the region. If you buy it through ICICI Bank credit and debit cards or Paytm, though, you will receive a cashback of INR 1,500 ($22). It’s a much lower specced device than its competitors as well, with only the camera offering more than other devices for a similar or even lower price.
Samsung has introduced their “Infinity Touch” set of dual cameras, comprised of one 16MP f/1.7 shooter and another 5MP f/1.9 shooter used for depth perception. It’s got an interesting feature in that it can reshape the camera blur into different objects. Take a look at the Twitter video Samsung India posted a few days ago to get an idea of what I mean.

It’s definitely a gimmicky feature, but it could be cool for some and showcases the potential for the Samsung Galaxy J8 in the future with its dual cameras. Portrait mode is also a nice feature to have on a lower-end device. The actual camera quality is yet to be seen though, and it could really be why the cost is so much higher than the competition.
We’ll have to wait and see what comes of this device, as with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 and a microUSB port it seems a bit dated. You can take a look at the full specifications below.
