Huawei has been using their Mate series as a way to show the world the best the company can do. In some cases, various features of these smartphones have proven to out-class Huawei’s competition and the company likes to boast about that in interviews and commercials. We’ve watched as Huawei has released incremental products to their Mate line, but rumors currently suggest the next in the series will be called the Huawei Mate 20. Not only that, but a recent report indicates that the Pro model of this series could actually have a screen that measures 6.9-inches from corner to corner.
The smartphone industry is constantly evolving with new hardware components, trending build material, overall design, and more. Two recent trends that have been happening lately have made our smartphones from 2018 look much different compared to any other year. The first of these trends happened as we saw companies going from the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio to one that has made it easier to hold and operate these larger screen devices with one hand (typically somewhere around 18:9).
Shortly after this trend took off we saw the introduction of the notch, which has given OEMs the inspiration to reduce all of the bezels as much as possible. So not only did the new aspect ratio allow companies to increase the screen size of their phone,s but the reduced screen bezels have allowed the display to expand even further. While things are still unconfirmed until we hear something from Huawei, a new report from The Bell says the next Pro model of the Mate series – possibly the Huawei Mate 20 Pro – will have an enormous 6.9-inch OLED panel manufactured by Samsung.
Now, it was only 5 years ago when Google was selling the popular Nexus 7 tablet with a 7inch display and we’re currently getting closer and closer to hitting this number on smartphones. Granted, the bezels of the Nexus 7 were incredibly big as well, but it helps to illustrate my point about how big the Huawei Mate 20 Pro would be if this rumor turns out to be true. We don’t know much else about this rumored device, but we should learn more soon.
