Once again, the Battle of the Bridge – now in its third instalment – marks a pivotal moment in the seasons of both Chelsea and Tottenham. The first time around, a bruising and vicious encounter ended Spurs’ slim hopes of beating Leicester to the title; the second time, Antonio Conte’s side romped to victory in the middle of a 13-game winning streak; and now, for once, both teams are fighting for the same thing: a place in the top four.
Both clubs, like much of the Premier League, have been left trailing in the wake of Pep Guardiola’s runaway champions elect Manchester City. Chelsea are currently 25 points behind the leaders in what has proven to be a meek defence of their title, and there has been a gulf in the quality of football played by Guardiola’s coruscating and creative City and Conte’s win-at-all-costs Chelsea.
