Until we acknowledge the emotional side of eating, we’ll never combat obesity

How often do you eat because you’re hungry?

I’d wager not that often. If you’re anything like me, most of the time you chow down on something because you’re bored, tired or because it’s just a habit. You always pick up a biscuit when you come home from work or always start the day with a cereal bar, even if you’re not hungry.

In 2018, food is much more than simply fuel.

Which might go some way to explaining why we’re in the midst of an obesity crisis.

Everywhere you turn, there’s panic about our ever-expanding waist-lines – the latest being from Cancer Research. The charity put out a load of ads last week, telling the public that obesity is the biggest preventable cause of cancer after smoking.

And I’m sure they’re not wrong.

Obesity comes with a plethora of co-morbidities which inevitably lead to a vastly reduced quality of life. Obesity can cause type II diabetes (goodbye fingers and toes!), hypertension, strokes and bowel cancer.
