Android Operating system has been infested with fragmentation ever since its inception. The latest operating system takes months, even years, to be released to the smartphones. One of the primary reason behind this fragmentation is that Android is open source and smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei, Sony etc make their own custom versions of operating system on top of Android.
With the new version release, all of these manufacturers have to repurpose their operating system according to the new updates which usually take months and hence slow updates and frustrated mobile users. Now Google has taken upon itself to resolve this issue through Project Treble.
Through Project Treble, Android Operating System is realized in modular form which allows separation of concerns. In simple words, Treble separates the device drivers from rest of the operating system allowing manufacturers to update their systems quickly. Project Treble is being shipped with Android Oreo but there are some devices which are making their platforms ready for Treble while some are not making the current ones compatible.
The following devices are being updated with Android Oreo + Project Treble.
- Essential Phone PH-1
- Google Pixel 1
