Scientists create ‘hallucination machine’ which lets you trip without taking shrooms

Imagine being able to set your brain to ‘deep fry’ without having to munch up a bunch of manky-tasting mushrooms.

That dream has become virtual reality, thanks to a VR ‘Hallucination Machine’ which basically sticks a blender into your synapses without you having to actually eat any drugs.

Researchers at Sussex University’s Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science created a VR experience where strange ‘hallucinations’ created by Google’s Deep Dream AI are layered over a walk around the campus.

It’s pretty freaky, frankly.

Twelve volunteers tried it, and claimed that it’s very similar to hallucinogenic drugs, particularly magic mushrooms, according to Newsweek.

The ‘hallucinations’ are generated by the AI, and the researchers don’t fully understand where they come from.
