A video was released last week after Brooke Amelia Peterson, the daughter of an Apple employee got her hands on the much anticipated iPhone X. The video, which included a trip to the Apple campus, unsurprisingly went viral. Apple immediately requested Peterson take down the video, a request with which she complied, but the damage had already been done.
There was speculation at first that it was in-fact Apple who had orchestrated the video’s release in order to generate even more hype surrounding the iPhone X, but the incidents following it proved otherwise.
In an update, Peterson uploaded another video to her YouTube channel claiming that Apple was forced to fire her father over the incident. Apple rules strictly prohibit filming of any kind on its campus, a rule of which the video was in complete violation of, so their response shouldn’t be too much of a surprise – they certainly don’t want to encourage future recordings of any yet-to-be released devices or have any corporate secrets leaked.
“Apple let him go,” Peterson said. “At the end of the day, when you work for Apple, it doesn’t matter how good of a person you are, if you break a rule they just have no tolerance.” She also stated that her father takes full responsibility for the turn of events, adding that her family holds no animosity toward the company. A teary -Peterson also requested that the abuse hurled towards her father stop, saying “If you want to call me names, that’s fine, but please leave my dad alone,”. You can see the full video below:
It’s important to note that the particular iPhone X that Peterson had wasn’t a regular one. It was an employee-only device which happened to be loaded with sensitive information like codenames for unreleased products and staff-specific QR codes, including a look at the new Text Editing application.
While this incident is particularly unfortunate, and the outcome doesn’t seem like it’ll change, it serves as an important lesson for others who are eager to showcase their work prior to its release.
