AGU Books Program Continues to Thrive

As we celebrate AGU’s Centennial in 2019, we seek to use the energy of the past to drive solutions to the grand challenges of the future. Our books program continues into its seventh decade, contributing to the advancement of the Earth and space sciences by publishing contemporary resources to support research, teaching, learning, and practice. Building on the successes of recent years, our books will showcase emerging science and foster international collaborations among researchers.

AGU’s publishing partner, Wiley, moved our publications onto the Literatum Web platform in 2018, improving not only design but also searchability. The full books catalog, dating back 7 decades, is now hosted alongside AGU’s journals, and a new search function shows book chapters in addition to journal articles. We also improved our navigation and updated the look and feel of the individual book pages.

To help promote our new books, AGU invites authors and editors to write complementary pieces that are published on Eos’s Editors’ Vox. In addition, with the help of Wiley’s dedicated Amazon team, we enhance pages for AGU books on Amazon.com with short extracts from Editors’ Vox.

Access the Scientific Breadth of AGU

AGU recently published several volumes that have focused on scientific issues with direct relevance to contemporary society.AGU’s books program includes publications covering the full scope of Earth and space sciences. Our long-standing Geophysical Monograph Series recently added new titles that stretch from the Earth’s crust, Lithospheric Discontinuities, to outer space, Dawn-Dusk Asymmetries in Planetary Plasma Environments. We have also published books presenting the latest developments in various scientific techniques and methods, including Microstructural Geochronology: Planetary Records Down to Atom Scale and Quantifying Uncertainty in Subsurface Systems. AGU recently published several volumes that have focused on scientific issues with direct relevance to contemporary society, such as Bioenergy and Land Use Change, Geological Carbon Storage: Subsurface Seals and Caprock Integrityand Global Flood Hazard: Applications in Modeling, Mapping and Forecasting.

AGU’s Special Publications series publishes volumes focused on practical topics, as well as on subjects that cut across the geosciences. The latest book added to this series was Scientific Integrity and Ethics in the Geosciences, reflecting AGU’s commitment to scientific ethics in the classroom, laboratory, workplace, and field. Also, as part of our efforts to strengthen the links between AGU’s meetings and publishing programs, the conveners of meetings are encouraged to publish the latest research and findings. For example, we most recently published Electric Currents in Geospace and Beyond, a book that compiled important research presented at a Chapman Conference hosted in Croatia. Meanwhile, the latest title in the Earth Science Series, Geochronology and Thermochronology, was a best seller in the past year.

We’re also excited to announce that AGU will add a fourth book series in 2019: AGU Advanced Textbooks. This series will provide valuable teaching and learning resources specifically targeted at upper undergraduate and graduate levels.

Finally, we were delighted that the Association of American Publishers recognized Climate Extremes: Patterns and Mechanisms with an honorable mention in the Environmental Science category of its annual PROSE Awards.

Be a Part of AGU’s Books Program

For the past century, discoveries in the Earth and space sciences have changed our understanding of the world around us. New findings have improved economic security, public health, and safety around the globe. As we look to the future, including the challenges and opportunities society faces, we are always looking for high-quality book proposals on contemporary topics across the Earth and space sciences.

AGU members receive 35% off all books available at Wiley.com.To discuss a book concept, we encourage you to contact our books editor, Ritu Bose, who is based with our publishing partner, Wiley. She will attend AGU’s Fall Meeting 2018 in Washington, D. C., next month and is happy to meet with prospective editors and authors. In addition, Wiley’s Author Resource Center provides a helpful guide to the book publishing process, including tips on how to prepare a good proposal.

In addition, don’t forget that although all AGU books are available via Wiley, Amazon.com, and other distributors, AGU members receive 35% off all books available at Wiley.com. AGU members are also entitled to a free eBook every quarter, which can be accessed via the My AGU page. Sharing these books is part of AGU’s effort to foster the exchange of knowledge and enhance perspectives within and across scientific fields, and we hope you take full advantage of it.
