Dropsondes Reveal Atmospheric Boundary Layers Over Antarctic

Ganeshan and Yang [2018] use unique dropsonde measurements from a field campaign to reveal the structure of atmospheric boundary layer over the entire Antarctic. The authors found four types of atmospheric boundary layers: stable with temperature inversion, stable without temperature inversion, well-mixed neutral, and convective. They showed that a significant percentage of boundary layers are well mixed, especially over the west Antarctic where one third of the boundary layers are well mixed. Such information was not available before.
