Nemanja’s Matic’s arrival last summer was supposed to free Paul Pogba. It only half worked. Early in the season Manchester United were treated to the very best aspects of the Frenchman, a galloping, creative, dynamic force on the football pitch. But more recently, the freedom afforded to him has left United looking over-exposed and vulnerable in the middle of the pitch.
That is partly Jose Mourinho’s fault, using four adventurous players ahead of his midfield duo. But Pogba – who by his own admission ‘feels most comfortable on the left’ of a midfield three – does not want to simply sit. Nor should he, given how effective he is in the final third and particularly when in transition.
For now, Mourinho has had to make a point to Pogba by dropping him, but in the longer term United will likely revert to the 4-3-3 formation that their manager used so effectively earlier in his career. What has stopped him… Read the full story
