The degrees awarded from Axact cost $5,000 and were given in one hour, the Director General Federal Investigation Authority informed Supreme Court as the hearing of the Axact fake degree scandal resumed.
The supreme court resumed the said hearing with a two-member jury headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar. As the proceedings continued, the dais was taken by the Director General Federal Investigation Authority Bashir Memon who told the court that Axact used to run as much as 330 universities, all of which had websites but no physical campuses. The degrees cost $5,000 and could be acquired in an hour’s time. Bashir Memon further told that court that the majority of the company’s revenue came from these universities.
As the hearing continued, the court issued orders to put the names of those accused on the Exit Control List, barring them from leaving the country. The name of Shoaib Shaikh, CEO Axact, was also on the list. The court also asked the lower courts to speed up the proceedings of the pending Axact-related cases, mentioning that if any of the accused doesn’t cooperate then his/her bail should be suspended. The hearing was later adjourned for two weeks.
Axact case was brought to the Supreme Court recently when the Chief Justice took suo motu notice of the fake degrees scandal following the reporting by international media that the Axact still had illegal operations. The company later started operations as these charges got levied. The company first came under rebuttal in 2015 when the New York Times reported that Axact was selling illegal degrees internationally.
