Samsung has been teasing the tech community with plans for a foldable smartphone for a while. However, Chinese tech giant, Huawei, who recently announced the interesting Mate 10 series seem to have included themselves in the race.

In a statement to CNET, Huawei CEO Richard Yu confirmed that the company actually has a “working sample” of its upcoming foldable handset. The device still needs improvements related to mechanical design, however, plus “better, more flexible screen technology” in order to become a product that’s ready to hit the market.

While dual cameras and bezel-less screens were all the rage this past year, it seems like foldable smartphones will be the hot new trend of 2018. Huawei has released impressive devices in recent years and it will be interesting to see what they unveil in 2018.

Though Huawei is still carrying out research on the device, it is nowhere ready to be released. Yu did say that it could be ready as early as next year but they’re still waiting to get their hands on better technology to achieve that goal. “We have two screens. But we still have a small gap (between the screens). That’s not good, and we should get rid of that gap.”, he said.

In addition to competing with Samsung on the foldable phones front, Huawei’s CEO, whose company currently ranks as the number three phone maker in the world, continues to be optimistic about his company’s success, with hopes to eventually overtake both Apple and Samsung in terms of market share. So optimistic infact that he made the following statement, “We will overtake them definitely. That’s our destiny. Maybe I’m not humble – but nobody can stop us.”

Chinese manufacturer ZTE also introduced it’s own version of the foldable smartphone last week so it’ll be interesting to see how Huawei stacks up against its ever-growing competition.
