Psychedelic drugs like LSD and shrooms ‘stop people committing crimes’

Getty ImagesPsychedelic drugs such as LSD and magic mushrooms have a bad reputation for causing antisocial behaviour such as wearing fluorescent clothing and enjoying goa trance.

But should authorities be handing out such ‘trippy’ drugs in a bid to cut crime?

Researchers at the University of Alabama found that past use of psychedelics drugs such as DMT, LSD, mescaline and magic mushrooms there was an 18% decrease in the likehihood of being arrested for violent crime.

There was also a 22% decrease in the odds of being arrested for property crime, according to 13 years of data from America’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

The research is based on responses from 480,000 adults, according to Alternet.

Peter Hendricks, associate professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham said, ‘These findings are consistent with a growing body of research suggesting classic psychedelics confer enduring psychological and prosocial… Read the full story
