Cynthia Erivo may be one of the most famous Brits in America that you haven’t heard of, a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy award winner who is now moving into Hollywood.
But she’s also a proud black British woman and she’s not afraid to tell her country to get their shit together.
‘I was doing the show The Color Purple and the producers wanted to take it to Broadway, but the reviews from the UK were not that kind to be honest, even though what was happening in the theatre was incredible- we sold out until the end of the run,’ she says.
‘But the New York Times wrote a wonderful review about what we were doing and that essentially took us to NY and in that moment, when I was asked, there was a light bulb moment of, “I’d like to go somewhere where people are not afraid to see a group of black people on stage”.’
